When I first got this book, by looking at the name of the book, to be honest, I wasn’t feel so interested in the topic. Since I pretty much know nothing about agriculture, I was worried that I would lost my interests in this book quickly. However, after I read this book, I found that the main character Kurt was not an agricultural expert neither, as I read the book I felt we are actually learning together. This made me gain more interests about this book; it’s like an adventure I went with Kurt, there are failures, unknown, and expectations in the story.
Kurt Timmermeister, an excellent baker at his restaurant, as he began to think about where the original food and ingredients came from. Thus, he looked for a four acres’ land on Vashon Island where he can discover the relationship between the food on the table and the actual ingredients. From now on, Kurt started his farming journey. Soon, Kurt started to grow his vegetables, fruits, and raises his livestock. During these process, Kurt tried many different techniques and encountered many failures at the same time. In his writing, Kurt talk about his mistakes without any reserve. Every time I read about his failures I always felt so pity for him, especially when he talks about those bees died every winter. I personally think Kurt should take some actions when bees died in the first winter, instead of just buy another swarm of bees after. Since Kurt started with not too much agricultural knowledge to farm, he should have concluded what he did wrong every time failure happens, in this way, he can avoid the same mistake next time. This book is very relaxing and joyful to read, the content is very smooth and easy to understand. I would recommend this book to friend especially anyone who loves to cook.
