After reading the
second half of The Blue Sweater, I
was amazed by the venture-capital firm Acumen Fund Jacqueline
Novogratz created. On the second half of the book, I felt Jacqueline is not
only telling the stories of how her organization help the poverty, but also how
to run an organization as a social entrepreneur. . Jacqueline
brought new idea of charity. Sentimental and sympathy can no longer help
poverty, and charity organization cannot be a puppet for people to show their
care to poor. In order to prevent poverty, we need to listen to what they
actually need. Because we cannot forever offer money and goods to them, thus we
need to solve the situation essentially. The only way to prevent poverty is to develop
their ability and make them financially stronger. In this book, Jacqueline help
the women to run business and make money on themselves, without relying on
anything.
Thanks for sharing this, I enjoyed reading about Jacqueline's approach to charity as well. We should be providing a solution to poverty and giving everyone equal opportunities to run businesses for example, rather than simply handing out money for free.
回复删除I like the notion that sympathy cannot help poverty. This is especially relevant in today's world because of "internet hashtagivism" and "keyboard warriors." People need to take action by creating sustainable solutions.
回复删除Thanks for sharing your views about this book. Your point "Sentiments and sympathy do not solve the problem of poverty" reminds me of the video we went through in class, during which the speaker in video said "to help in poverty, what you really need is empathy instead of sympathy". I think your view really stands out iterating this idea.
回复删除Your idea regarding 'developing their ability' resonated well with me. From my perspective, a sustainable social entrepreneurial program is to empower and enable people instead of simply feeding them. Also, the entrepreneurial program needs to encourage the local entrepreneurs to take substantial stakes in it to make sure that they are fully devotional to the program.
